1. No Class Next Week

This is the last week of the first semester. There's no class next week and then the new semester starts on January 31. There will be new volunteer schedules posted, so please check the member’s only page to see if you are assigned to be in a classroom.

2. Feed My Starving Children Event

Volunteer opportunity at Feed My Starving Children!

Since we don't have co-op on the 24th of January (it's our "break" between semesters),a volunteer event at Feed My Starving Children has been setup for Hedfex.

There is space for 40 people to go, from 2:30 to 4:30 pm, at the Eagan location.  If you'd like to volunteer, please email Heather Bouwman (hmbouwman@stthomas.edu) with your name, number of volunteers, and ages (for the kids--adult ages not necessary!).  I need to send FMSC a final count of kids/adults.  Please note that they have some restrictions on ages (see the note below) and child/adult ratios.

[Note also: I have brought my seven-year-old there with no problems--but if you're bringing someone that young, you probably need a 1-1 child/adult ratio.]

For more info on FMSC, go to www.FMSC.org. Please note that they are a Christian organization, though the two times I've volunteered there, they have been very low-key and non-evangelical/denominational. The volunteer work is fun, and the kids really feel like they've accomplished a lot when they've finished!

Please feel free to let other friends know--I'd like to get 40 people signed up!

PLEASE NOTE: There is a child to adult ratio that needs to be met.  The adult child ratio for 3rd-6th Grade is 1:3, 7th-9th Grade is 1:4, 10th-12th Grade is 1:5. (adults must be included in your total number scheduled)

2. Dance Performance Opportunity

Is anyone interested in trying to coordinate this for Hedfex? Please let Laura know if you would like to look into this for our group.

UNIQUE DANCE PERFORMANCE FOR YOUTH AVAILABLE NOW FOR BOOKING

I now have a unique dance performance, called “MARIE TAGLIONI IS NOT A DISH OF PASTA; OR MODERN DANCE, FROM TOE SHOES TO NO SHOES” available for performance at your venue. This show draws on more that twenty
years of experience that I have teaching dance in schools as an artist in residence.  John Munger, of Dance America and the Minnesota Fringe Festival, called it “a fabulous instructional experience for middle schoolers.”

This show puts modern dance into a framework in relationship to other dance forms and other arts, and so it can function on its own as a learning experience in dance.  This, I think, can be particularly helpful for arts organizations who want to provide dance programming but are afraid of the “risk” involved with providing a longer, perhaps more expensive, dance residency or workshop for young people.

Marie Taglioni” is also the perfect introduction to a more in depth dance residency or workshop, which I can provide for venues that do want that.

If you are interested in more information about this performance, I would be happy to send you a brochure. I have available a DVD and a written script, should you be interested in previewing the performance, and I can provide you with materials that you can use as preparation and as follow up for your students.

I would love to perform my show for you.  Pleasereturn this email or call me at 612-965-3335. Janet Skidmore janetskidmore@yahoo.com

3. No Popcorn

The clean up crew would like to request that popcorn not be brought for snack. It creates quite a mess, and adds a lot of extra work at the end of the day. Thanks for your understanding.

  1. Bathroom Note

Another request related to clean up: the boy’s bathroom was very messy last week. If your son has “aim issues”, please feel free to take them into the women’s bathroom with you so you can supervise. Again, thanks for your understanding!

  1. Benefit Concert for Feed My Starving Children

How do the "worst kids in the history of the world" end up in this year's church Christmas pageant? Why can't anyone stop the Herdmans from participating? And how is it that they turn a series of disasters into what firemen, church ladies, Reverend Hopkins, call "the best Christmas pageant ever?" A hilarious, touching, and unforgettable holiday tradition!

It's so fun for all ages that many kids have birthday parties there, and our Girl Scout troop went every month last year! Participants will see a short video about the program and world hunger, package food (the older kids like to see how fast they can go), and then find out how many meals the group packaged and how many children they have fed. If you can't make this date, check out their web site for walk-in evening times. For more info on the organization,

1. Piano Teacher

Ione Butler teaches piano and voice lessons in her home and lives in Burnsville, 2 blocks east of Presbyterian Church of the Apostles on the corner of 130th and Lakeview Drive .  She is available for lessons in the daytime. She is happy to meet with anyone who may be interested on a get-to-know-you basis. Ione Boettcher Butler (952) 736-9252

2. Scholastic Orders

New Scholastic book fliers are available this week. Check on the parent information table after 12:30. Orders can be given to Laura Donovan by October 25th. Only one check, payable to Scholastic, is needed, no matter how many fliers you order from.

3. Spanish Magazines are here!

The next issue of the Spanish magazine that several members ordered has arrived. These will be on the parent information table, labeled with your name.

4. Carpooling and Temporary Guardianship Info

Several people have asked about carpooling, and other situations where parents of children younger than 11+ will not be present at co-op. If you are car pooling or cannot be at co-op for some other reason, we have a temporary guardianship form that must be filled out and signed by the parent of the child(ren) and the adult who will be responsible for the child(ren) that day. This form must be filled out and given to Buck or Laura every time. This form will be posted on the website, and we have copies if anyone needs one. Also, all volunteer responsibilities must be fulfilled, so if you won’t be at co-op, make sure you have lined up a substitute.

5. Snack Schedule

If you haven’t signed up for the snack schedule yet, please check with Laura Donovan and add your name to the schedule. Snack schedule is now posted on the website (www.hedfex.org).

1. Reminder about Reporting Requirements

October 1 is the date that homeschooling parents are required by law to notify their local superintendent of their intent to educate their children (between the ages of 7 and 16) at home. MACHE has designed a reporting form (MACHE Non-Public Education Compulsory Instruction Report) which is available online at www.mache.org. It is not necessary to utilize any forms provided by your local school district, or even the Dept. of Education.

2. Would you like to perform on a Steinway Concert Grand at the Mall of America?

On Saturday, November 3rd, music and generosity will meet when home schooled students participate in a MusicLink Piano Marathon sponsored by Schmitt Music.

Pianists will be playing in the Nordstrom Court at the Mall of America, raising money to benefit the MusicLink Foundation which strives to bring musical instruction to children in need.

The young performers will collect pledges for the two pieces they will each perform, with all proceeds benefiting Minnesota children. A Steinway Model D Grand Piano and a Yamaha Clavinova Digital Piano will be provided by Schmitt Music.

The MusicLink Foundation is a national non-profit organization which links qualified music teachers with promising children who have financial need.  MusicLink teachers agree to teach these students at a free or reduced rate. EVERY Home-schooled student who studies the piano is invited to participate.  ALL levels of experience are welcome. What a fantastic opportunity...to prepare a piece, perform it in a unique environment, and raise funds for a worthwhile cause.

A PIANO SALE will also take place in conjunction with this event, with special prices for home-schooled families, and a percentage of proceeds from the sales donated to MusicLink.

To begin the registration process or for more details, contact: Barbara Ongna at 952-435-2454 or barbara.ongna@schmittmusic.com and we'll send you an informational packet.  You can also read about this event on the Schmitt Music website or go to http://www.schmittmusiconline.com and click on Private/Home School/Parochial Students

3. IMPORTANT ALLERGY NOTICE:

We have a few students who are allergic to peanuts, eggs, dairy, etc.  The parents are OK with snacks of any nature being provided in the common area but please be mindful about allergies for foods provided in the classrooms.

4. Strike Up the Band! Program

The coordinator for Schmitt Music’s Strike Up the Band! Program has invited any student members of Hedfex to join their band.  Strike Up the Band! has a new instructor this year and they are anticipating a wonderful program.  If your child is interested in band, please contact

Cheryl Hartmann, Coordinator, Strike Up The Band! 763.398-5046 cheryl.hartmann@schmittmusic.com

7. Notice for Parents
Last week several of the kids were turning some of the social room toys into guns and playing some games with them. I know families have different levels of comfort when it comes to gun/weapon play, so in consideration of our diverse group, I would like to ask that everyone talk to their kids and re-direct their play to other ideas. In addition, we are fortunate to have found such a great place to hold our co-op and we don’t want to have any problems with the church over this sort of issue. Thanks for your understanding and cooperation.

September 12, 2007

1. Please clear your cups, plates, etc from your table when you leave for the day. Also, if you have cans or plastic bottles, please use the recycling bins in the kitchen.

2. Piano teacher recommendation:  Mary Rose has 14 years of experience teaching piano and is looking for beginner to intermediate students in her Prior Lake home.  She is available every week day from 9:00am - 3:30pm and would love to teach homeschoolers of all ages!  Please call 952-440-3205 for current pricing. Talk to Michelle Halvorson if you have questions.

3. Fieldtrip about bees at Woodlake Nature Center in Richfield .  It will be held on Wed. Sept. 26th from 12:30-2pm.  The cost is $3 per child if we get the 12 children minimum.  Otherwise, it will be more.  Please RSVP in the fieldtrip book this THURSDAY!!!!

4. Help with Great Books: Last year there were some people who indicated a willingness to teach some sessions of great books.  Ideally I'd like two people who would be willing to do four weeks each, but I can work with whatever you can do.  I also need someone willing to sub for me as a teacher ocassionally, or we'll just have to cancel class on days I can't be there.  Please let me know if you are able to help! Thanks, Millie millie@peapods.com

6. Business Meeting Minutes

MEETING TIME:  The meeting time will change in the future to accommodate parents who may have been volunteering in a classroom during today's meeting.

WEBSITE LOGIN:  If you still need your user name and password to access member info on the website, contact Kim Schiller

CONFLICT RESOLUTION:  There are very specific steps to take if you have a conflict at Hedfex.  Do not email Laura, Buck, or the person with whom you have your conflict.  Emails will not be accepted as a method of resolution.  Please follow these steps if a conflict arises:

   1. Talk to the person first

   2. Find a mediator

   3. Request to have the issue brought up in a group meeting

   4. If you have an issue with a teacher, please talk directly to Laura or Buck

SNACKS:  Each parent is responsible to bring a snack 3 times during the year.  If you haven't already signed up to bring snacks, look for the sign up sheet.  Please monitor your own children's snack intake.  Also, make sure all snacks and food are eaten at the tables.  No food is allowed in the hallways, classrooms, or any carpeted areas.

PARENT RESPONSIBILITY:  Please be responsible for your children while in the church.  Do not let your children use the bathroom near the nursery, unless accompanied by an adult, as the toilet tends to plug easily.  Also, make sure they are not running around in the hallways, or using loud voices.

SCHOLASTIC BOOKS:  Laura Donovan will be taking Scholastic orders.  Please make only one check out to Scholastic for your book order and return it to Laura no later than September 20th.

FUNDRAISING:  We are currently collecting Box Tops and Campbell’s Soup labels to earn some extra money for the coop.  Check these two websites to see how you can help:  http://www.boxtops4education.com/     http://www.labelsforeducation.com/default.aspx.  Containers for box tops and soup
