"It is like having a once a week private school!"

Who: We are a group for home educators of all faiths, beliefs, and theories who want a non-judgemental and accepting environment in which their kids receive high quality, challenging classes taught by experts.

What: We offer a la carte classes for Preschool through 9th grade. Our classes are offered at 4 levels and are limited to 15 students in a class. You may also participate in many quality field trips, Scholastic Book Sales, Usborne Book Sales, and service projects. Parents meet for coffee and conversation. Parents of students ages 11+ may choose our drop-off option (parent not required to be present).

When: Thursday afternoons from 12:00-4:30pm Sept. through May. You may attend as much or as little of the day as you want. Junior High students have a drop-off option.

Where: Presbyterian Church of the Apostles 701 E. 130th St. Burnsville MN

How: Explore this web site and contact Kim Schiller at schiller@usfamily.net if you would like more information. We require a $75 registration fee ($50 if registering prior to April 15) per family, signed agreement for membership, release of liability, and medical form. We also require that members volunteer as class assistants. Class tuition is additional and non-refundable unless the class is cancelled by the instructor or the co-op.

Why: We are a group that offers choice and quality. We strive for a supportive, non-judgmental environment. This could be what you've been looking for!

Mission: We are a welcoming group, focused on serving all home educated students learning at grade levels K-8/9 and their families. A nursery and pre-school are available for younger siblings. Our format and course offerings will provide families with the ability to choose activities that meet their interests. We aim to enrich education through the use of classes taught by qualified instructors, many field trip opportunities & social times. Our mission is to:

  • provide group rates for a variety of subjects at four learning levels - ages 3-5, ages 5-7 (no reading/writing required), ages 8-10 (moderate reading/writing required, some homework), and Junior High/ages 11+( significant reading/writing and homework)

  • bring experts to you rather than you going to them

  • foster friendships between moms and between kids

  • allow members to choose which subjects to enroll in and pay for only those

  • provide enrichment activities and social time for parents

Vision: Our co-op will be a safe and supportive place for home educating families to gather, learn, and socialize. Lessons will challenge students and expand upon an assumed base of knowledge. Educators will be encouraged to share their ideas, goals and knowledge in a non-threatening environment.

Goals:

  • Each student will show an increased level of confidence in a group setting.

  • Each student will leave each activity with a positive feeling about themselves.

  • Each student will leave knowing more than when they arrived.

  • Each parent member will contribute their time and skills to the group.

  • Families will give and receive support from one-another.

  • Parent members will leave feeling supported and affirmed in their mission to home educate.

  • Members will feel respected and included in decision making processes.

  • Members will have access to course syllabi and "expected learner outcomes"

Structure:

We will meet on Thursday afternoons throughout the school year. We meet at the Presbyterian Church of the Apostles, 701 E. 130th St. Burnsville MN. Families are welcome to participate "a la carte" - participating in one or more classes they choose. Communications will occur via this web site's "MEMBERS-ONLY" pages and parent discussion times. Members will sign up for their preferred classes beginning in March with open enrollment for new families in April. A yearly family fee of $75 will also be collected at registration ($50 if registering before April 15) for the following year to offset administrative costs and building rental.

Expectations:

  • Participants will respect all property and belongings of the meeting place and the tutors.

  • Participants will respect each other and the tutors.

  • No child will be left unattended by their respective parent. If arrangements are made for another parent to assume responsibility, an "Authorization for Temporary Guardianship" must be signed.

  • Some events will be paid for by the group fund as voted on by members.

  • Members will participate in our Box Tops for Education Program and other fundraisers in order to offset costs.

  • Members are expected to act as classroom monitors/assistants.
